This RPG, featuring a fun and unique battle system along with a cast of hilarious char- acters, is a blast to play, although it does *feel* kinda short (~30 hours). No Dreamcast owner has an excuse for not picking up this excellent game! This walkthrough WILL contain plot spoilers! Don't yell at me for ruining the story for you, all right? ^_^ =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= =- 3) STORY -= =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Grandia II's storyline, from the instruction manual... THE LEGEND OF THE "BATTLE OF GOOD AND EVIL" When the world was still young and yawned at every dawn's waking, Granas, the God of Light, came. All was bathed in the holy light of Heaven. Thus, those were the days of marvels. Yet, there were those who sought the power to resist Granas, they found power in Valmar, the God of Darkness. Power to release the energy bound up in life. Power to unmake the world. Thus, in those days, they made war. The fighting continued endlessly, until the Sword of Granas pierced the infinite darkness of Valmar. The mighty blow from Granas not only smashed Valmar to pieces, but also carved several ugly scars in the very surface of the planet. These are the Granacliffs that survive even to the present; scars in the land. The reason why we call this earth the "Cursed Land." Ryudo is a young Geohound, working odd jobs with his companion Skye. Known for his ability to do just about ANY task, he quickly built a reputation as an efficient workhorse. Willing to do what no one else wished to. Bouncing from job to job in order to keep the gold flowing in, Ryudo accepts, albeit grudgingly, a job involving the Church of Granas, in the village of Carbo. Once in Carbo, a beautiful voice carries on the wind, singing hymns to Granas. Intrigued, Ryudo enters the nearby church and finds a Songstress, Elena, practicing hard for an upcoming ceremony. It is from here that Ryudo accepts his role, bodyguard to the Songstress Elena. And so two strangers head out on what seems to be a simple assignment... =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= =- 4) CONTROLS -= =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= This section describes the basic controls. <--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->--> <- field screen controls -> <--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->--> Analog Stick -> Move character (Run) D-Pad -> Move character (Walk) A -> Examine, talk, confirm B -> (Hold + D-Pad) Run Y -> Change compass destination L & R -> Rotate camera Start -> Open menu screen <--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->--> <- menu / combat screen controls -> <--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->--> Analog Stick -> Select commands, etc. D-Pad -> Select commands, etc. A -> Confirm selection B -> Cancel selection Y -> Turn on/off party AI L & R -> Switch between item, magic, etc. menus =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= =- 5) GAME OVERVIEW -= =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= This section covers the basics of Grandia II. <--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->--> <- [5.1] battle system -> <--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->--> -------- Overview -------- Grandia II throws a rather interesting battle system into the RPG genre with its Initiative Point (IP) Gauge. While in battle, a blue gauge appears in the lower part of the screen containing two bars and the letters "COM" and "ACT." The top bar places a marker for each enemy monster, whereas the bottom one sets a marker for your party characters, and this gauge indicates when every participant in the fight has his turn. These markers, as the battle con- tinues, gradually travel to the right; upon reaching COM, you are able to input a command for one of your characters (or, the enemy selects a command). Whatever action is chosen will not be executed until that character's marker lands on the gauge's far right end. Different commands may require more time than others, so fight with care! ---------------------- Encountering The Enemy ---------------------- The way that you encounter the enemy party (or they bump into you) on the field screen makes a HUGE difference of who has the upperhand at the battle's outset. There are three methods to meet with foes: Head On: Both parties clash face-to-face. No one has an advantage in this case, and everyone essentially begins on even ground. Sneak Attack: Ryudo's crew encounters the monsters from their rear. Here, your party surrounds the enemy and can execute actions before the opponent can. Ambushed: The enemy force ambushes your group from your behind, surrounds them, and attacks before you have the chance. --------------- Combat Commands --------------- All right, so you're standing toe-to-toe with some badass demons, now what? A character can select a command when his marker reaches COM on the IP Gauge, so let's have a look at what he can do... Combo: Performs a two-hit combo with currently equipped weapon. Rare access- ories can be equipped to add extra combo attacks (very useful!). Critical: Attacks with a piercing blow that knocks back an enemy's marker to the left. Although you can probably get away without ever using this command, it definitely makes life easier, as you can delay a monster from performing an incredibly powerful attack. Perhaps if you plan it right, you can slay the enemy party without ever being damaged! Moves/Magic: Uses a character's move or magic spell. Self-explanatory. Items: Uses one item from the party's stash. Defend: Protects a character by reducing inflicted damage. Escape: Run away! Run away! ---------------- Status Disorders ---------------- Sometimes an enemy is able to inflict a status effect to one or more of your party members, so here's a list of what they are! Poison: Gradually drains HP. Continues after the end of battle. Sleep: Halts a character's ability to act. Plague: Random affects a character with other disorders. Continues after battle. Confusion: Character randomly attacks anyone, friend or foe. Paralysis: Halts a character's ability to act. Magic Block: Disables the use of magic spells. Move Block: Disables the use of moves. Fallen: Character is out of commission (HP reaches 0) until revived. <--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->--> <- [5.2] character growth -> <--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->--> -------- Overview -------- In the world of Grandia II, characters acquire power and abilities through four different areas: levels, moves, skill books, and Mana Eggs. The usual experience points enable your party to level-up, but the other areas require either Special Coins (SC) or Magic Coins (MC), which are then spent like money to gain these new skills. To maintain a well-balanced band of warriors, it is recommended that you work on gradually building all four areas. Deciding on how to distribute your hard-earned coins is a challenge; however, there is one thing you should keep in mind. Spend coins on abilities you WILL actually use and find helpful! Many a time I kicked myself for wasting my coins on some worthless skill I knew I wouldn't ever make use of... -------------------- Character Parameters -------------------- Sure, you might already know what a character's stats mean, but here are descriptions just so you know! STR (Strength): Character's attack strength. VIT (Vitality): Character's defensive strength. AGI (Agility): How quickly a character's IP Gauge progresses. SPD (Speed): How quickly and how far a character can move in battle. MAG (Magic): Character's magic attack strength. MEN (Mentality): Character's magic defense strength. ATK (Attack Value): Determines amount of physical damage inflicted on enemies. Based on STR, equipped items, and skills. DEF (Defense Value): Determines amount of physical damage absorbed. Based on VIT, equipped items, and skills. ACT (Action Value): Determines how fast IP Gauge advances. Based on AGI, equipped items, and skills. MOV (Movement Value): Determines movement speed and distance in combat. Based on SPD, equipped items, and skills. ------ Levels ------ If you have played other RPGs, the leveling system is no foreign concept to you. Winning battles allows your characters to walk away with experience points, among other goodies. When a party member acquires a certain amount of these points, he levels up and becomes a little bit stronger than before. ----- Moves ----- Each of Grandia II's characters comes with a set of unique abilities, simply called moves. Moves are an invaluable weapon in battle, as they can heal, decimate enemy fighters, or boost the party's power. However, unlike magic spells, these skills deplete SP, and as SP gradually regenerates, you fre- quently have the opportunity to use moves in battle. Use them often, but use them well! As mentioned earlier, increasing a move's level requires Special Coins that can be collected after battle like experience points. A move has a total of five levels, as indicated by the number of stars beside it, and each level means the ability can be executed more quickly and with more power. ----------- Skill Books ----------- Finding skill books is a rarity in Grandia II, but their benefits are incredible! Every book contains six skills, such as increasing maximum HP or empowering fire spells, which can be leveled up in the same way as you would with a character's moves. A party member can equip only a few skills, so choose wisely! Should you cover up a character's weaknesses, or should you further boost an already powerful strength? --------- Mana Eggs --------- Similarly to skill books, Mana Eggs are only found once in a blue moon. These magical items enable a character to equip spells and cast them in a fight (at the cost of some MP, of course!), and like everything else, spells can be leveled up with coins. A higher level means the spell is casted faster. Needless to say, that is VERY crucial against powerful foes! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= =- 6) CHARACTERS -= =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= This section describes the main characters and their special moves. Ryudo, along with his feathered friend Skye, rob a group of monsters for treasure, and our spiky-haired hero is promptly dropped down into the forest to receive the reward for his efforts. This is Ryudo's life. Hopping from job to job in hopes of getting by. Noticing another job offer, Ryudo decides to take up the request made by the Church of Granas. And this is where you finally gain control! Follow the arrow on the compass to a save point positioned next to a nearby ladder. Save, if you so desire, and press A to clamber up. The defensive Elena doesn't take too kindly to Ryudo's interruption, and Carius tells the Geohound to meet him at the inn for further details. While there, the priest explains the situation to Ryudo. A ceremony is to be held at the Garmia Tower, and Elena needs to be escorted and protected throughout this whole ordeal, as she has a very important "role." Ryudo, coaxing Elena to reveal more about this so-called ceremony," fails miserably, and Elena refuses to sleep inside the same tent as Ryudo after considering possible scenarios such as, "Don't touch me there, Ryudo!" Anyhow, moving right along... Head east into the lower trail for a bag of 50G. Once you are done there, take the high road, and witness an exciting scene showcasing a bunch of boulders falling down! Ascend the rope ladder, proceed on the mountain path, and stop when you spot two wooden see-saws, each holding a rock. Releasing one boulder causes it to plow through the stones surrounding a treasure chest, and the other enables Ryudo and Elena to reach a Climbing Hat. Defeat the nearby Mottled Spiders, and descend the rope ladder. As you are walking down this mountain path, flip open the dark treasure chest for a Crystal Brooch, Poison Antidote, and Yomi's Elixir. Chat with the armored guard outside the wooden barricades to learn that a group of monsters from a nearby cave attacked the town, and as if you couldn't already guess, it's your job to set things right! Visit Vyx at the inn, and select the option to greet him. After Ryudo and Vyx catch up, an argument erupts between a blonde boy named Roan and a motley crew of mercenaries over a valuable medal. Elena suggests they help the boy find his jewelry, but, as always, Ryudo adamantly refuses to do so. Interrupting a seemingly peaceful scene, Millenia pops out of the blue and takes Ryudo by surprise (and stuns him in the process!). Head back into the main inn room after gaining control. Millenia and Ryudo decide to help out Roan from becoming a meal for the monsters, so exit the inn, continue past the guard you met earlier, and search the rock wall for the cave entrance. <--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->--> <- [7.4] boy, interrupted [ durham cave i ] -> <--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->--> Enemies Items ------- ----- Crag Snake 100G Frost Frog Firebomb Medicinal Herb (x2) Poff Nut Sleep Charm Yomi's Elixir Proceed on the rocky path, and Ryudo gazes around the dead sexy cave for a better look. Now, of course, a cluster of stalactites plummet to the ground and conveniently place a staircase before your feet! Recover and save at the cone, if necessary. Pass under the arch... Ryudo and Millenia spot a Carro emerging from several wooden crates. Ain't he a cute lil' fella? Collect the nearby Firebomb, dash by the two torches, and then jump off the low ledge. If common sense doesn't tell you anything, have Ryudo push the mammoth boulders to pulverize the cavern wall, sending two Crag Snakes your way! Eradicate the buggers, enter the next room, and acti- vate the switch in the very center (there is a Medicinal Herb nearby!). This directs the water, changing which of the two bridges you can access. For the moment, cross the platform that you just raised. Collect another herb if you so desire, walk underneath the rock archway, grab Yomi's Elixir (it's hidden by the storage crates), and shove that flat stone over the edge. Remember the switch? Backtrack, and hit it again! This time, however, proceed into the room near the wooden bridge. Trapping the dynamic duo, you are forced to deal with FOUR Crag Snakes! Blech! Millenia's Fallen Wings ability should be enough to kill them all at once. Keep pressing forth until you are ensared in another trap; however, you gotta battle Frost Frogs this time around! Once they are gone, leave through the southern exit to discover a Sleep Charm and Poff Nut. You can give the nut to the Carro you spotted earlier, although it seems the only result is Ryudo making a comment on how happy the rodent looks. Stroll past the underground lake and into yet another ambush! The sparkly chest contains a Calming Harp for the taking. Outside this room lies a group of Frost Frogs guarding a Medicinal Herb. Close by is a metal crate and two switches. Step on the switch (that is NOT in the path of the box!) to lift the nearby gate, and go inside to nab 300G. Ram the crate over the other switch, enabling Ryudo and crew access to an alcove with a lever that part- ially drains the lake. The adjacent room holds a Stone Head helmet (go get it!). Before crossing the newly formed land bridge, pick up the pouch with 100G. A second Poff Nut resides on the other side, and s'more Troglodytes await the party after hopping off the ledge. Swing the lever to bring the wooden bridge up to the top, and be sure to push the boulder and record your progress at this time! After tasting the "del- icacy," Ryudo suggests visiting Gadan in the morning. On this fine, sunny day, continue south of the inn to stir up a dialogue with a starving young boy, which leads the party inside the engineer's house. Elena, being the inquisitive person that she is, learns from this family that all of Liligue City's inhabitants have suddenly lost their ability to taste food! What's next? A paper shortage? You can locate Gadan's house by proceeding south of where you just left. The insanely obese man demands 10,000G in order to ride the Skyway, so need- less to say, we will need to find some alternate solution! Take Gadan's suggestion, and shove off to the city's church high on top of the hill (switch your compass's destination to Church if you can't find it). Unfortunately, the gaping hole in the ground prevents you from progressing here, so return to the fork and go the other way. Woohoo! Another fork! Head southeast to pick up a Mogay Bomb, but select the northeastern passage to delve further into the cave. And, like the other splits, this next one has one route that leads to an item (dash northeast for a Purifying Herb), while the other is one you want to travel... Step down on the switch, and read over the stone column. It tells you to light the appropriately colored candlesticks, so that's what we gotta do! If you backtrack slightly, you discover that two passages have opened up on each side of the wall. First, proceed into the archway on the north wall! This room is ridiculously simple. Trash the enemies, steal the Bonds of Trust and Confusion Charm from the chests, and raise the green orb. Easy, no? Instead of leaving the way you came in, select the other path off to the side, leading you to a previously unopened sector. Don't worry, it's easy to solve! Shove that mahogany box on the eastern side to position it back into place. Climb the nearby staircase (a Ghoul is hiding within the crate at the top!), and activate the magic red ball to raise a second pedestal. Now, you probably noticed an item stashed in between the boxes and wall...if you REALLY want a Poff Nut, exit the room, and ram that box from the northern side. Anyway, once you are ready, backtrack to the chamber with the monument, and embark into that other gap in the wall mentioned earlier. The final objective, the blue light, resides here. Cross the spike-covered bridge southeast of the inn, and the party discovers the little girl from the Garden of Dreams. Sandra, Aira's mother, orders the group to come inside for further discussion. Once the short talk is over, Aira takes notice of some people outside... The Cathedral Knights, lead by High Priestess Selene, are stationed near the town entrance and plan to "purify" Mirumu of Darkness. And by "purify," I mean "kill or burn anything that appears remotely suspicious." Needless to say, no one is going anywhere... With that in mind, spend the night at the inn. Ryudo, during his stay, falls into a truly bizarre dream sequence that revives memories of his past. Look out the window, and a flying eyeball takes the Geohound by surprise! The party believes the nightmares plaguing Mirumu are coming from that creature, so check on Irina in the manager's room. She has already fallen to the curse, but Skye attempts to follow the eye. Exit the inn. The remaining critters fly off to the cave near Sandra's house. She informs you she will search and locate the evil one behind this whole problem, but Ryudo believes in returning to the fissure to find the culprit. But, before you can revisit the fissure, Aira approaches the party and then promptly runs into the shed behind her house. Drop down the hole in the shed, returning you exactly where you left off earlier. Aira drags everyone into the garden a second time, revealing her "evil" eye that has been causing this curse. Backtrack to the village through Lumir Forest. As if you couldn't possibly guess, Selene grills Sandra regarding her dealings with Valmar and discovers the darkness within Aira's eye. However, before she can do anything, Aira mysteriously vanishes after being held by Elena... Go to the garden via Lumir Forest, and allow Millenia to create a portal leading to the fissure. Crash at St. Heim's store, and equip the team with better goods since you probably have quite a bit of money by now. Tell the inn keeper you want to the spend the night to start up another rousing dialogue among the party members. Interrupting the discussion, a priest orders Elena to visit the Cathedral at once... Sporting an flashy outfit reminiscent of Earth, Wind & Fire, the Pope sug- gests that Valmar is trying to revive himself, and it is hope to Elena to stop it. However, the Granasaber must be found, first. And, barging in once more, the priest wants the remaining members to talk to the Pope, so exit the inn, and travel up to the Granas Cathedral. Ain't it a purdy lil' building? Upon talking to the gate guard, have Ryudo enter the Audience Chamber while Mareg and Roan dive into some books in the library. Listen! For the Pope speaks! Zera attempts to deal with his restless foll- owers with inspirational words and then commands them to continue about their business. Follow Zera to his room. The Pope desires Ryudo to search for the Divine Sword/Granasaber/Big Pointy Stick in order to prevent the Day of Dark- ness, Valmar's revival, from ever happening. Naturally, Zera has absolutely no clue where the hell the sword is, leaving Ryudo confused. With that conversation out of the way, head up to the library and chat with Mareg and Roan. If you are really bored, take a look at the books, but you should rest at the guestroom when you be done. The game then cuts to a scene involving Cardinal Oro being ambushed by the Wings of Valmar, Millenia. A guard, rather calmly I might add, informs Ryudo and company that Valmar is in the building! Run to the balcony at this point. After Miss Millenia makes her speech, backtrack to the Audience Chamber, so Ryudo can accept searching for the Granasaber. And as a nice bonus, Zera gives the party the Book of Priests! The Inn Master suggests the crew talk with people in town if they are searching for a certain something, and he mentions a man named Hemble. During the following morning, Mareg decides to leave the pseudo-couple alone while they visit Hemble at the docks. Exit the inn, set the compass desti- nation to Informant Tent, and speak with the sailor outside. Hemble suggests Ryudo and himself arm wrestly before he decides to tell anything about the Divine Sword, and the game goes into an explanation of how this works. However, it does not really matter; for if you fail, Elena distracts Hemble, allowing Ryudo to finish the game off. Naturally, Hemble knows absolutely nothing about a Divine Sword... After the couple sits down on a bench, have Ryudo approach the juicebar and choose the "hidden" option. Millenia makes an appearance when our spiky- haired hero returns, and she's ready for some action! Shortly after the vixen takes pleasure in the dance and music, Mareg and Roan approach the new couple and alert them of trouble erupting inside the castle. Continuing north sends you to the room with the save cone you were in earlier (be sure to take up the Magical Brace nearby!). Backtrack, and head down the corridor you just passed a moment ago. The Blonde Prince suggests discussing the Gate with his father, so scurry into his office via the Audience Chamber. The King has already decided to open the Gate, even without Roan's medal. At this point, Roan gives a short review of the so-called "People of Dark- ness," but a forceful tremor ripples through the castle, alerting the party to return downstairs. The best you can do is hold out for as long as you possibly can. That being said, simply heal the party until Melfice executes the Wailing Soul Slash upon Ryudo, ending the battle... EXP: None SC: None MC: None G: None ITEMS: None =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Tio stops Melfice from finishing off his younger sibling, and Ryudo is still stunned at the vicious monster his brother has become. Standing up against his kingdom's traditions, Roan decides to remain in Cyrum and mold it into a better country no longer tied to Valmar's grasp. Enter and then exit the castle through the main gate. After the entire party makes its final farewells, pick up Tio inside the kingdom, since she does not seem to know what to do after being freed. Travel to the Port, and chat with Captain Bakala of the ship 50/50. He can transport the crew over to the island; however, once you go, you cannot return to this continent! When you feel you are ready, tell the captain. <--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->--> <- [7.11] seaside voyage [ ceceile reef, point ] -> <--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->--> Enemies Items ------- ----- Crimson Claw None Because Elena seems to be new to cruising on ships, Bakala's 50/50 makes a pitstop at Ceceile Reef until she recovers. Walk away from the starting point to uncover huge pearl-like stones buried in the ground, but the team believes they should ignore them for now, so continue on. Ryudo pitches a tent for the night in an open area slightly ahead (MORE DIALOGUE!). [ insert romantic cutscene with Ryudo and Elena here ] In the morning, a clamor of several Crimson Claws rudely awakens the party and immediately throws them into combat. Most of this oceanic area is straightforward, just proceed along the path and engage any enemy parties in your journey. Be sure to collect Mareg's Dragonfly Slayer stashed on top of the stone arch! When you head down a ramp, you can pick up a Gale Stone hidden off to the side, and there also are two 1000G pouches ahead of that. In the area with the Crimson Claw colonies, enemies may ambush you by popping out of the holes, so watch out! A Healing Fruit can be acquired here, too. Besides encountering a Scaly Warrior for the first time, another chest of gold can be opened for you here. While walking among the partially submerged rocks, take the time to pick up the Coral Necklace and Lullaby Staff from the spiffy-looking treasure boxes, then travel across the western path onto a small island with a Mermaid Harp protected by two enemy groups. Proceed to where the compass directs you, collect the Electrum Stone, and rest and record at the save cone, for ahead lies a couple Super Sized-crabs! Ruh-roh, Raggy! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= BOSS: Crimson Tail (9800 HP) (x2) Next time on FOX...when Giant Crabs Attack!! Have your characters cast Diggin', WOW!, etc. once or twice to support the party. Diggin' is an important spell here due to the fact the Crimson Tail's Phantom Echo lowers characters' defense power by one while inflicting harm. It would be better to keep your defense at zero than let it crumble into the negative range! The Crimson Tails' main offensive tech is the Scissors Storm, which causes ~700 HP damage to one character and may possibly cause paralysis. Conserve you MP/SP, and toss Paralysis Salves to cure the disorder when necessary. Resort to the Alhealer spell when it comes to healing. Attacking the duo is nothing special. Pay up at the general store to build your supplies and weaponry, and proceed up the ramp by the inn to encounter an angry mob ready to throw Ryudo out of Garlan (kinda like Jazz from Fresh Prince). The spiky-haired Geohound suggests searching his old house for clues, so dash over there! After Ryudo and Gatta do a bit of dueling, spend the night at the inn. Desiring to learn about Ryudo's mysterious past, Elena is visited by Skye, who explains the entire story in detail (and why does she not realize who the speaker actually is...?). In short, Melfice was an expert swordsman possessed by the powers of Valmar and then murdered his bride-to-be, Reena. Melfice vanished and was never seen again. Due to his brother's actions, Ryudo was labeled as an outcast, exiled from Garlan, and became a Geohound to survive. In a sudden flash, Ryudo believes Melfice is at Grail Mountain. Gatta arrives at the scene and hands Ryudo a note from Melfice telling him to meet up at the "Plateau of Memories." How convenient! Following the standard Grandia II formula, a save cone is stationed slightly north of the starting point. Bypass the cone, continue up, and then walk west to gain 1000G. Now enter the path southeast of that save cone, collect the Makibishi and 3000G on the ground, and turn north. There are a couple steam vents here again, so pay attention to your footsteps! After nabbing Tio's Double Moon among the trees, shove the sword statue to plug up the river, enabling access across. On the other side of the river lives the dreaded Man-Eating Tree! No joke! Defeat it, and pass through the tight pathway into an open field. You can uncover a Face Paint near the broken hill ramp. If you want a Mars Talisman, trek east of the previous item, and walk over the river once more, and when you are finally ready, travel up the log ramp in the north. A Potion of Azure is placed in the west beyond the ugly puddle of muck; continue north to spot a second statue, which serves the same purpose as the first one did. Dash over the collapsed bridge, acquire the Grail Fruit, and then get the Healing Fruit stashed in the enemy-infested field. Rob 3000G from the chest in the northwestern corner, and grab the Dark Armor stashed near the mammoth-sized boulder. There is a Grail Fruit located at the uppermost tip of this field (by a steam vent). Go through the narrow passageway up ahead. After the Flame Toads are eliminated, you can cross the canyon via the muck-covered ropeways. Do just that to reach a treasure box containing a Move Blessing, Bonds of Trust, and Earthen Axe. Remember to get the 1000G pouch! Dash as far south as possible beyond the ropeway bit to discover a Dynamite, and then simply follow the compass's direction. This definitely will not be an easy task! Immediately boost your party's defense because, just like the last time, Melfice can initiate a spell lowering your characters' abilities to defend. Do not bother wasting your time with stat-hindering spells, such as Stram and Cold, for this boss can counterspell your attempts with Speedy, etc. Your MP can be better spent elsewhere! Melfice relies on two dangerous techniques, Wailing Soul Slash and Demon Horde Slash. Wailing Soul deals at least 1000 HP damage to one character, while Demon Horde concentrates on the entire party, inflicting about 700 HP damage. Alhealer is key to keeping everyone in tip-top condition! Focus your assaults upons Melfice; the other two parts will not end the battle if they are destroyed, so why bother? There isn't too much to say here other than utilize your best spells and special moves. Have one character, preferably Tio, stick to restoring HP and using items to support the group. When Melfice is nearing death, he begins to use his Evil Horn Attack, damaging and canceling any party members near him. Quite a dilemma, eh? As it turns out, Ryudo has been infected with the Horns of Valmar, which previously destroyed his brother's body. Millenia attempts to remove the Horns from Ryudo, but she suddenly stops (no surprise there!) and orders Elena to help her save the man's soul. Ryudo is saved, of course; however, the Horns can still control him if he lets his guard down. While at the cemetery, Gatta hands Ryudo a Friends Necklace to him as a keepsake. The flowers are playing a game of catch! Anyhow, take notice of the vapor-spewing plant ahead, for its fumes poison the entire crew! You can collect an Aromatic Root for Elena in the northwest corner of this section, and then cross the river to the east. Now you must scramble over several tree roots. Collect the Healing Incense at the start, and continue to discover a group of Scaly Warriors "hiding" behind a giant branch. Fight them, if you wish. When you travel onto the second Texas-sized root, take the southern fork, and open up the treasure chest for a Sylph's Robe. Backtrack to the main path. Near the following plant, grab from the Divine Talisman off the ground, and head on up. Crossing on the flower's petals is not necessary here, but you can do that to avoid the Giga Mantis party. Examine the roots up ahead to build a "bridge." At the three-way split, collect the Quake Stone from behind the curtain before walking onto the southern root. Take the Baobab Fruit from that red flower, and advance northeast to uncover land affected by Melfice's vile grip. After Elena becomes completely dumbfounded by Mareg's beliefs (Oh, no! He has faith different from mine!), acquire the Super Mogay Bomb from the west, and then simply follow the compass to Nanan Village. <--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->--> <- [7.13] search for the granasaber [ nanan village ] -> <--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->--> After receiving the friendly welcoming, trek up to the Elder's House, and speak with the cane-wielding man outside. Follow the compass into a room containing writing on a stone tablet, which mentions collecting the Walnuts of Lights to pass the trial. Next, the Carro draws the curtains, so command Ryudo to go through. And the highlight of the entire game is...COLLECTING NUTS!! Playing this bizarre mini-game is very straightforward. Direct Ryudo to one of the three nut-carrying pedestals, and press A to grab the nut. The catch is the nuts must be fairly level with Ryudo, so he can actually reach them. Collect as many as you can within thirty seconds! When the game is over, advance into the room by the Carro, take the Walnut of Light, and spring out into the town. Stunned by the couple's wonderful performance, the villagers award Ryudo and Elena with a special item. Each time you do the trial, the amount of nuts required to pass increases, and the prize also changes. Here are the rewards: +---------+------+------------------+ | Attempt | Nuts | Prize | +---------+------+------------------+ | 1st | 1 | Ring of Guarding | | 2nd | 4 | Bloody Saucer | | 3rd | 8 | Miracle Scales | | 4th | 12 | Platinum Feather | | 5th | 16 | Book of War | +---------+------+------------------+ Anyhow, it is time for the festive ceremony! Elena decides to show her talent in singing, following the Elder's request, and Mareg continues to coax Tio into accepting feelings and becoming more human. Proceed to the spring once you gain control of the party. Naturally, this scene focuses on the conflict between Elena and Millenia for Ryudo, and it appears as though Millenia wants to get in on the action. Not surprisingly, Ryudo somehow manages to get screwed over on both counts... Exit Nanan Village, and proceed to Ghoss Forest East. <--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->--> <- [7.13] search for the granasaber [ ghoss forest, east i ] -> <--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->--> Enemies Items ------- ----- Fenny Bird 1000G Giga Mantis 3000G Man-Eating Tree Revival Gem Pit Viper Wolf Boots Yomi's Elixir Again, another save cone is stationed by the entrance. If you are really bored, touch the peppermint flowers to send them spinning, but when you are ready, proceed into the open field littered with Fenny Birds and Pit Vipers. Because the cone is so closeby, it wouldn't hurt to defeat all of the enemies for extra EXP and coins. Open the treasure box in the middle for a Revival Gem accessory. Continue south, and tread through the sludge. You can collect 1000G amongst the flowers and a pair of Wolf Boots northeast of the previous item. Follow the compass to uncover a Giga Mantis party, and then head across the root of a mammoth tree. Take the southeastern root if you wish to put an extra 3000G in your pockets; just advance north to move on (note one path in that fork leads to a dead end!). Be sure to take the Yomi's Elixir right before entering the second eastern section. <--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->--> <- [7.13] search for the granasaber [ ghoss forest, east ii ] -> <--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->--> Enemies Items ------- ----- Giga Mantis 1000G (x2) Man-Eating Tree 3000G (x2) Pit Viper Black Belt Dragon Scales Vaccine Hey, folks, more mushrooms! Do the Mario! Slice the two barricading 'shrooms, and travel through several "rooms" that contain a number of mushrooms. If you happen to chop up certain ones, the nearby trees morph in Man-Eating Trees, so watch out! At one point, you come across a room off to the side that holds a chest, and as you might suspect, approaching the box arouses the wrath of more Man-Eating Trees. Quickly steal the Dragon Scales, and leave before the party is ambushed in battle. In the next room, engage the Giga Mantis/Pit Viper mob, and ignore both the root and the row of mushrooms, for they offer no rewards and are simply dead ends. Continue forward by passing underneath the root archway to the east. Here, one of the seemingly innocent trees transforms just by getting near it! Travel around the western edge of the mound for a Vaccine; then follow the other way around and pass the arch. Near the large boulder, you can find a root taking the party to a 3000G chest, while the other leads to a platform with two mushrooms. Trek up north. Once more, be wary of these trees! One turns into a Man-Eating Tree! Grab the 1000G pouch stashed in the northwestern corner of this area. Clamber up the gigantic tree root, and choose the path leading down to collect 3000G and a Black Belt accessory. Backtrack to the other route, which empties the party out by the forest's exit (and another 1000G). <--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->--> <- [7.13] search for the granasaber [ the great rift i ] -> <--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->--> Enemies Items ------- ----- Fenny Bird 3600G Giga Mantis Healing Fruit Magic Blessing Man's Headband Man's Iron Clogs Seed of Moves Vaccine According to Elena's quotation, the Granasaber lies somewhere within that fiery whirlwind in the distance... Record your progress at the cone by the cliff's edge, and proceed east to head down the mountain. Rather than descending the ladder, hop over the tiny gap, and hug the wall as you walk to the Healing Fruit. If you fail to do so, part of the rockway will collapse, sending the party face-first into the ground. Not good! Near the next ladder is another unstable rock section, so stick close to the wall! Advance east by climbing the giant stone ladder. Battle the Giga Mantis party, if you wish to. Jump the gap, and enter the cave to reach a dark chest containing a Seed of Moves, Man's Iron Clogs, and Man's Headband. After backtracking, leap off the corner of the walkway into a Fenny Bird nest. Jump from where you land, and then make yet ANOTHER leap onto a lower floor. Here, you can collect 3600G by walking east. Head past the Giga Mantis crew, ascend the giant ladder, hug the wall to avoid falling down, and the chest is all yours! With that out of the way, keep on going west where you went east earlier. However, before you can advance on through this nest here, you must go up the ladder and give the boulder a gentle push, enabling the party to cross a hole (couldn't they just jump it?). The next party is a very straightforward winding path with a dive-bombing Fenny Bird. After clambering down the big ol' ladder, take the eastern route until you come across another boulder. Shove this one to fill up one of two gaps down below. Backtrack, and proceed west once more. Climb up the first ladder you encounter, jump off the ledge, and stay close to the wall to collect a Magic Blessing. Now, proceed down the mountain. Remember that boulder you pushed a short while ago? Fill up the other pit by ascending the ladder and shoving this rock. As you continue forward, go west at the fork for a Vaccine, and then backtrack to the other path. When the path splits towards the beginning, go east to uncover a Healing Incense stashed on a small hill, and then advance south to spot some of your Giga Mantis buddies. Head around the mammoth-sized boulder, and keep going south for a Seed of Swift. Your next destination is through that pile of rocks you just dashed by. So, go there, and continue to frolic in more open fields of grass. After you walk past the second giant boulder, keep an eye out for the Fenny Bird to avoid being ambushed! Now you enter into a field with three new paths to take, two of which hold items (1200G and Healing Fruit). The one you should take empties the party into a rocky canyon environment, complete with several Fenny Birds on patrol! Start this battle off with a few hit-all spells/moves, such as Hellburner, to remove the two Snow Leopards from the field. Then just simply pummel the Leck Guarder with heavy-duty attacks until he falls over. None of these enemies pose much of a threat, so don't be too concerned. Touching this pillar causes the robot sentry to begin patrolling. Don't touch it, for it will damage your entire party! Dash through the southwest hallway, grab the 1200G pouch, and then hit the pillar in the nearby room. Backtrack to the other hallway, and repeat the same process (be sure to collect the Exorcism Bow hidden off to the side!). Now, with all three lights turned on, pass through the main gate to enter right into a trap... =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= BOSS: Naga Queen (x2) (12500 HP) And as we all know, snake queens have rather large "attributes," right? Naturally, the Tio Clone possesses the same Special Moves as the real Tio and throws in a couple spells, such as Gale and Silence, into the mix. Cast Cold on the enemy until her Act becomes -5, which helps to prevent the clone from attacking every five seconds. Offensive- and defensive-lowering spells are also helpful. Unfortunately, using Combo attacks is very risky here, due to the fact the Tio Clone can dodge effectively AND counterattack your party! This only leaves your moves and spells to use for assaulting, and obviously, you should employ the party's best abilities when doing so. Enter the opening. Engage the Venomous Larvae at the first platform, and proceed to discover a dark treasure chest with a Golden Potion, Potion of Azure, and Resist Dress. Continue to follow the hexagonal path until you come across an eye statue. Advance north if you want 1500G, but activate that pillar to raise the next pathway you should visit. Order Ryudo to shove the transparent blue block out of the way. Grab the Thor Stone by traveling north, and then push the next box to the south. 4500G is located on the western path here. Again, shove the ice cube you encounter. Follow the compass at this point (collect the Panacea stashed off to the side), and leap off the ledge to find the entrance to another sector of Valmar's Body. Upon entering this house of mirrors, follow the southwestern path for a Pretty Bracelet hidden in a chest. Backtrack to the other route you just ran by a few moments ago. Eventually, the party finds a crystal ball in the center of a room, but don't touch it yet! Proceed along the path nearby for a Revival Gem. Now hit the switch, which reverses the gates in the doorways. Continue through the halls, and immediately activate the next crystal ball. Touch the switch following the last one, enter the newly opened path, and raid the chest of its Sage's Hat. Activate the switch once again. At the fork, continue southwest for yet another Pretty Bracelet. Hit the crystal ball you find next, and head through the now opened passage for Ninja Clothes. Follow the compass into the Spherical Room after you hit the switch a second time. Upon poking the bright yellow ball in this place, everything in the previous area is flipped upside down! So, backtrack. Start off northeast from the save cone, and choose northeast again at the split for a third Pretty Bracelet (Valmar must be eating too much jewelry...). Head through that other path you just bypassed. At the crystal ball switch, travel northeast to uncover a box holding an Adamantine Helm and another box in the connected room for a Pretty Necklace. Walk back to that switch, and touch it. Like before, you should go through the open hallway before you decide to activate the ball in the following room. Doing so nets you... A PRETTY BRACELET!! What a surprise! When you spot another switch, ignore it, and pass through the open hall. Touch the ball that's in front of the Tentacle Passage entrance so you can acquire a Fire Charm. Enter the passage when you are ready. Things start off straightforward here... Push down the eye staff when you find it, and then head down the lowered walkway. Shoving the first ice block here enables Ryudo reach 1500G and Magical Medicine stashed off on the nearby platforms. Continue pushing the next block to reach a chest holding a Gold Feather, Bonds of Trust, and Rainbow Hi-Heels. After shoving the following cube, proceed along the path, and jump from ledge to ledge until you encounter a save cone. The Body tends to use Suck In, which drags the entire party in together, and obviously, that sets up a trap for you when the enemy attacks. Valmar's Body casts Zap! when this situation comes up. As mentioned, command Millenia to paralyze Valmar's Body with her special move, and then focus on utilizing target-all spells and moves. Doing so damages and eventually destroys the pathetic tentacles, leaving only the body left to defeat. The villagers reveal that the Holy Knights are killing the people, so Ryudo better do some- thing fast! Return to the inn, and save your game. What you must watch out for is its Avici Slash, an attack that summons an incredible barrage of swords. It causes over 1000 HP damage to EACH party member! Keep Alhealer handy! After hitching a ride on the glowing elevator, Pope Zera explains the truth behind the Battle of Good and Evil, and naturally, Elena is shocked to learn that Lord Granas actually died in the fight against Valmar. Take another look in the first passage you see for 6000G, and then go into the other hall. Here, walk east at the first split. At the second, you can gain a Thor Stone by heading south. More Salamadiles are awaiting Ryudo and company at the exit, so be careful! In order to progress any further, you must construct a bridge to cross the gap. This can be done by entering both corridors and activating the bubble machine at the end of each one. Before trekking down the stairs, you should obtain the Holy Ghost Staff in the northwestern passageway. <--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->--> <- [7.15] the rebirth of valmar [ new valmar iii ] -> <--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->--> Enemies Items ------- ----- Killer Trees Battle Manicure Mind Eater Face Paint Valmar Moth Golden Potion Meteor Scroll Mystic Potion (x2) Ogre Shoes Omnipotent Seed Priestess' Robe Have Ryudo cut the blobs with his sword. Around the bend, watch out for the falling pickles, as they damage anyone who is hit by them. The next sector is a series of strange tubes. Pay attention to the moving lights. Touching it deploys an enemy that you will probably fight with. Head west, defeat the two Killer Tree parties, and raid the chest of its Meteor Scroll, Face Paint, and Priestess' Robe. Backtrack to the light, go north, and then east into a new room littered with enemies. After going into the purple tube, continue south to find more yummy pickles. Dodge them, and grab the Omnipotent Seed. Follow the purple tube west (take the Mystic Potion along the way). Obtain the Golden Potion in the next room, and head through the red tube. Choose the southern path at the fork to reach a dark box holding a Mystic Potion, Battle Manicure, and Ogre Shoes. Return to the other route. Inside that room, you can find a save cone and a tube leading to two more Valmar Magnas, which you already fought not too long ago. Defeat the two monsters, and proceed into the core. If your party is weak, recover at the save cone before moving on. <--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->--> <- [7.15] the rebirth of valmar [ new valmar core ] -> <--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->--> After confronting Zera, the party is thrown in battle... =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= BOSS: Valmar's Core (48000 HP), Left Face (34000 HP), Center Face (41950 HP), Right Face (28000 HP) Unlike the few previous encounters, this fight is not so easy. Immediately have Tio use Whisper to Stars to boost everyone's parameters as much as you can (up to five times). You will need every advantage you can get! The faces cast a variety of spells, including Burnflame, Crackle, and Alhealer. As if that wasn't bad enough, the Core's attacks can easily cripple your characters, removing any stat bonuses and lots of HP. Hammer Claw often hits multiple party members and damages their IP, and Destruction Light fires a laser beam that inflicts over 1000 HP damage to anyone in its path. However, its worst attack is Judgment Day. This blast chops off a couple thousand HP per character! Use two Alhealer spells or any recovery items to couneract this. Assaulting with all of your best abilites is a strategy that's easier said than done. Try to pull off as many as possible before Valmar has a chance to do anything, as this boss can execute multiple attacks in a row, and if you are not prepared, you will not have much of a party remaining. This fight becomes much more manageable as you remove the faces using Sky Dragon Slash and White Apocalypse.
